Hey Sunset: A Script Handwritten Font for Digital Branding

As a UI designer who ships landing pages, SaaS dashboards, and conversion-focused e-commerce experiences, I’m selective about display fonts. They need personality without sacrificing clarity, warmth without undermining professionalism, and distinctiveness without breaking rhythm. Hey Sunset is one of the few script handwritten fonts that consistently delivers across real web contexts — not just mockups.

Visually, Hey Sunset balances casual charm with intentional structure. Its strokes have gentle tapering, natural entry/exit flourishes, and consistent x-height — traits that prevent visual fatigue on screen. Unlike overly ornate script fonts, it avoids dramatic swashes or unpredictable ligatures that disrupt reading flow. That makes it highly effective as a display font, especially where human tone matters: hero headlines, testimonial quotes, course titles, or boutique product names.

In practice, I use Hey Sunset most often in high-impact, short-form contexts. Think: the headline above a newsletter signup, the tagline in a hero section, or the “limited edition” badge on a Shopify product banner. It’s not built for body copy — and shouldn’t be. But as a script font anchoring a brand’s voice, it adds instant recognition and emotional resonance. On a coaching website, “You’ve got this” in Hey Sunset feels supportive, not salesy. On a ceramicist’s online store, “Hand-thrown • Small-batch • Made in Portland” gains authenticity without extra illustration.

Readability holds up well across devices — provided you respect its role. At 32–48px on desktop and 28–36px on mobile (with appropriate line-height), it remains legible even over subtle image overlays or gradient backgrounds. For dark mode, I pair it with a light off-white (#f8f8f8) rather than pure white to soften contrast and preserve its organic texture. On light backgrounds, avoid ultra-thin weights if your CMS or hosting doesn’t support variable font loading — stick to the standard weight for consistency.

Visual hierarchy is where Hey Sunset shines. Because it’s inherently expressive, it naturally draws attention — but only when used sparingly. I’ll set an H1 in Hey Sunset, then drop immediately into a clean sans serif like Inter or Manrope for subheadings and body text. That contrast creates breathing room and guides the eye without competing. In a portfolio site, using Hey Sunset for project titles while keeping case studies in a neutral typeface reinforces both creativity and credibility.

Font pairing isn’t optional — it’s functional. Hey Sunset works best alongside typefaces with strong geometric or humanist foundations. A modern sans serif (like Poppins or IBM Plex Sans) gives structure; a warm serif (such as Cormorant Garamond or Literata) adds editorial depth for blogs or long-form course pages. Avoid pairing it with other script or handwritten fonts — the result dilutes uniqueness and muddies tone. And never pair it with ultra-condensed or monospace fonts unless intentionally aiming for dissonance (e.g., experimental art platforms).

For conversion-focused layouts, placement matters more than size. I’ve seen significant lift in CTA engagement when Hey Sunset appears on secondary buttons — like “Grab Your Spot” or “Start Free Trial” — especially when those buttons sit beside descriptive body copy in a neutral font. The contrast signals action without shouting. It also performs well in email subject lines rendered as web-safe fallbacks (via inline SVG or image-based headers), where its character helps cut through inbox noise.

Brand identity benefits most when Hey Sunset anchors a limited typographic system. One weight, two colors (primary brand color + neutral), and strict usage rules — e.g., “Hey Sunset only for headlines, logos, and accent phrases” — create cohesion across websites, social graphics, digital ads, and even printable assets like webinar handouts. It scales gracefully from favicon-sized text treatments to full-screen hero banners, especially when exported as WOFF2 for fast webfont loading.

Licensing is straightforward but essential to verify. Hey Sunset is a commercial font, meaning it’s licensed for use on live websites, client projects, SaaS interfaces, online stores, and downloadable digital templates — as long as the license covers web embedding. Always check whether your purchase includes WOFF/WOFF2 files and whether it permits use in hosted tools like Webflow, Figma plugins, or no-code builders. Some licenses restrict use in editable templates sold on marketplaces — confirm before bundling into design assets.

It’s also worth scanning what’s included beyond the base style. Does Hey Sunset offer stylistic alternates? Swash capitals? Multilingual support for European Latin characters? While it doesn’t include Cyrillic or extended diacritics, it covers Western and Central European languages robustly — enough for most global-facing startups, creative agencies, and indie brands targeting English-speaking and EU markets.

In responsive layouts, I treat Hey Sunset like a design element — not just text. On mobile, I sometimes reduce letter-spacing slightly (tracking: -20) to maintain density without crowding. For buttons under 140px wide, I cap usage to three words max — “Yes, Please” works; “Let’s Build Something Together” doesn’t. And I always test rendering in Safari and Firefox, where some script fonts can appear subtly tighter or looser than in Chrome.

Ultimately, Hey Sunset succeeds because it respects the constraints of digital space while delivering expressive value. It’s not a novelty — it’s a tool. One that supports brand tone without demanding attention, enhances readability without oversimplifying, and strengthens online identity without requiring visual crutches. Whether you’re launching a new course platform, refining a DTC brand’s web presence, or building a portfolio that reflects your voice — not just your work — Hey Sunset earns its place in your typography toolkit.

Use it where humanity needs emphasis. Pair it where clarity needs grounding. License it where consistency needs protection. And let the rest of your interface breathe around it.
